Weaving Rattan

3D Pattern Modeling of Weaving Rattan Products

About the design of weaving rattan

Here “weaving rattan products” refers to products (non-fabrics) with fixed forms such as rattan chairs, baskets, etc.. Such products are made of natural materials such as bamboo, natural rattan, and willow or plastic rattan materials and are mainly produced by weaving.

At present, in the production process of traditional Chinese rattan products, the design link is integrated with the craftsmanship link. They mainly include random weaving, coordinate weaving and printing weaving. Among the three, random weaving is the form of weaving at will. Besides, its design process is in the form of belly drafts, mostly the way of skilled artists. Coordinate weaving and printing weaving are based on prefabricated artwork.

China is still in the developmental and exploratory stage in the research of rattan product modeling. This article is a brief overview of some academic researches on 3D structure modeling of rattan products.

3D structure modeling of weaving rattan

The content of 3D structure modeling of rattan products is roughly divided into two aspects:

  • Basic structure modeling
  • Pattern modeling

– The basic structure refers to the uniform pressing shape of the warp and weft woven fibers. And this type of structure mostly presents in a continuous form. Because woven products like rattan chairs and baskets have a stable shape, compared with fabrics that can be flattened, there are certain differences in the method of structural design. Besides, there are relatively few studies in this area.

– The modeling of 3D rattan patterns is complex.

3D Patterns and Color Schemes

Equal-width or equal-diameter fibers are mainly used in rattan and willow products, because rattan and switchwood fibers are mostly equal-diameter circular cross-sections.

Non-circular section fibers such as rectangles are modeled somewhat differently than circular section fibers.

In conclusion

The aesthetics of rattan products mainly comes from the structural design. If it cannot be accurately expressed, it will be greatly compromised in the characteristics of the display product. It is still difficult to make accurate structures with the current general CAD software. The main reason is that the workload of modeling is huge. Designers generally only design the rough surface shape of the product, relying on the texture to achieve the visual effect of the woven structure. However, the texture cannot accurately express the weaving structure. Besides, building all the weaving structures into 3D models is not conducive to the designer’s conceptual design due to the excessive workload.

The pictures in rattan product catalogue used by the manufacturer for display can only be the pictures of the rattan products. Because of the inability to find out the market need for innovative products, many manufacturers are reluctant to invest in the production of physical exhibits. And it is also a factor that hinders the effective communication between manufacturers and customers.
